Breathe Better Air For A Higher IQ

The type of air you breathe can make a significant difference in the health of your brain. Research in New York City shows that improving your air improves your IQ.

A study at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University shows that even small reductions in air pollution can help children achieve a higher IQ. Collectively in New York, the researchers estimate that a small improvement in air quality could increase lifetime earnings for more than 60,000 children by $215 million.

These scientists previously found that kids of mothers who were exposed to higher levels of air pollutants called PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) while they were pregnant had lower IQs at age 5 than other kids.

“Our analysis suggests that a modest reduction in urban air pollution would provide substantial economic benefits and help children realize their full potential,” says researcher Frederica Perera.
